Enotria Wines and Vineyard

Jan Ladmore and staff invite you to inspect this unique property, Enotria Wines with its pristine vineyard and amazing views.

Comprising of approx. 43 acres with a cleared area for the residential area and for the vineyard with the remainder being natural bushland, and its just beautiful. The property also has a large 4-bedroom home, a wine cellar and an amazing outlook over Bungendore and the surrounding valley...............the view from the home is stunning.

Now if you are not sure about growing grapes but love the concept of having your own vineyard and enjoying your own wine, but are not really sure about what to do with continuing on with the vineyard?........ then don’t worry as there are several options that can be discussed with the owners.

With a true passion for the industry, the owners have meticulously produced several of the best local wines including Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot.

The current owner comes from a long line of Italian winemakers, starting in Southern Italy and more recently in the Barossa Valley of South Australia. This has been a labour of love for him and his family as by hard work, experimentation and dealing with the ups and downs of climate weather, birds and kangaroos, a fine product has been made, its a strategic blend of climatic, geographic and geological attributes necessary to produce premium cool climate grapes themselves.

The main feature of this property is a beautiful 1.6 Hectare (4 acre) vineyard. The site was carefully selected to bring out the best in cool climate wine grape varietals, especially Pinot Noir. The vineyard is east facing and situated at 840 metres above sea level making it one of the highest vineyards in the district.

The main grape is Pinot Noir which makes up approximately 70% of the plantings, supplemented by Pinot Gris, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. These premium grapes make excellent wine and are much sort after by local wineries. The current owner has established a small winery on the premises to take advantage of the terroir.

The wines have been very successful at local and interstate wine shows.

This is a lifestyle property with the addition of a comfortable home and excellent views east to Smiths Gap and the area south of Lake George. There is also a 5000+ bottle cellar under the main house with a stable environment for long term storage of wine.

Vineyard History

In the early 2000’s a vineyard was established to take into account the prime location for cool-climate wines. 4 acres of premium grapes (including cuttings sourced from the Loire Valley in France) were planted at an altitude of 840 m with an easterly aspect. The elevation and the easterly facing aspect contribute to a longer maturation time leading fuller bodied and more complex wines.

Vineyard

1.6 Ha /4 Ac vineyard that has produced an award-winning Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Cabernet Franc

There are approximately 5000 vines all “cane” pruned. 70% are Pinot Noir consisting mainly of clone MV6 (created for Australian conditions) and Burgundy clones 114, 115 and 667 which contribute to more intense flavours and a richer body in the wine. The remainder of the vineyard is planted to Pinot Gris, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Netting is used to protect from bird strikes during the last month of fruit maturation. 40% of nets were replaced with new items this year.

Wine

A winery was established on site in 2018. This was stocked with all the necessary equipment for grape crushing and pressing, fermentation of wine, maturation of wine and final bottling.

The wine is matured in a combination of new and old French oak barrels as well as variable-capacity stainless steel tanks.

From the Pinot Noir grapes, 4 wines are produced; 2 Pinot Noir dry reds, a Rose, and pure pinot noir sparkling wine (called champagne in France) made by the traditional method.

The remaining varietals are used to create Pinot Gris, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.

Winemaking

No animal products are used in the winemaking process. The Pinot Noir is fermented with both natural and commercial yeasts. 7 to 10 tons of grapes are crushed from the vineyard annually. There is capacity to crush a larger volume if required.

Awards

The wines have been very successful in wine shows around Australia with several medals awarded in the last few years. This is due to the excellence of the grapes and the care taken in the wine-making. The Canberra and region population is very supportive of the local wine industry.

Future Directions

A new owner has several options open to them. The grapes can be sold to other local wineries (excellent demand), wine can be made by other local winemakers for the vineyard, on-site wine production can proceed as per the current situation, and additional wine can be made with externally sourced grapes.
